Arkansas approach to the New Greenville Main Span River Bridge
This project provides for the construction of a multi-lane bridge to connect the river bridge to Lake Village Arkansas via U.S. Highway 82 with the possibility
of a future 4 lane facility on the same in Arkansas. The Arkansas Approach project was let to contract in November of 2005 with the contract being awarded to
Austin Bridge & Road LP contractors from Irving Texas. This contract which is set to be complete in November of 2008 has an approximate completion cost of $66
million dollars. As of June 2007, this contract is 43 percent complete.
Clinton-Raymond Road Interchange
The Clinton-Raymond Road Interchange construction project is currently underway. The scheduled completion date is October 2007. The project includes the complete
reconstruction of the interchange including new bridges on I-20 over Clinton-Raymond Road, a new loop in the southwest quadrant to improve access to the interstate
for traffic southbound on Clinton-Raymond Road going eastbound on I-20, improving U. S. Highway 80 to five lanes from Clinton-Raymond Road to Springridge Road,
installation of signals at all interstate ramps and at the Clinton-Raymond Road and U.S. Highway 80 intersections. Lighting and landscaping of the interchange
is included.
Currently, the new I-20 Westbound and Eastbound bridges over Clinton-Raymond Road have been completed. The Southwest and Southeast ramps are completed. All major
drainage structures are complete. Widening of U.S. Highway 80 is underway with curb and gutter sections in place in various locations. Dirt work is approximately
90-95% complete.
In the future crews will begin to remove I-20 Eastbound detour, including the bridge. Other future plans includes: opening U. S. Highway 80 to five lanes between
Clinton-Raymond Road and Springridge Road; opening the new Northeast and Northwest ramps to traffic; crews also plan to construct and open the loop on the Southwest
quadrant and Clinton-Raymond Road will open to five lanes; and complete installation of signals and landscaping items will be done on this project.
I-20 from the Mississippi River Bridge through Vicksburg
This project will reconstruct I-20 to significantly improve the level of service to the traveling public. Additional lanes will be added through the entire
length of the project and interchanges will be modified or reconstructed. Vertical alignments will be improved to meet the current design criteria and frontage
roads will be rehabilitated as necessary.
Environmental studies are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2007 and should be completed in approximately eighteen months. Design will begin shortly thereafter.
Right-of-way acquisition an d construction will follow as funding becomes available. It is estimated that construction costs will exceed $150,000,000.
MS Approach to the New Greenville Main Span River Bridge
This project provides for the construction of a multi-lane bridge to connect as an approach the main span of the Mississippi River Bridge and the future
Highway 82 bypass around Greenville. The Mississippi approach contract was let in March of 2005 for approximately $86 million. The completion date is set
for April of 2008. As of June 2007, the contract is moving forward fluidly and is ahead of schedule with approximately 85 percent of the project completed.
The contractor for this project is Hill Brothers/Jensen, Inc. (a joint venture).
U.S. 82 Bypass at Greenville
Completion of the bypass will reduce traffic congestion in Greenville and adjacent areas, and enhance economic development in the area. Preliminary engineering
is underway and Right of Way is being obtained. The first leg of the 82 bypass is set to be let by MDOT in July of 2007 with the termini being from Mississippi
River approach project eastward to Highway 1. The total cost of the construction for this project is estimated to be $95 million.
U.S. 82 Mississippi River Bridge Main Span at Greenville
This project provides for the construction of a multi-lane bridge across the Mississippi River, one-half mile south of the existing U.S. 82 Bridge,
between Washington County, Mississippi, and Chicot County, Arkansas. Mississippi is the responsible Department of Transportation for this project.
The Main Span Contract was let in June of 2001 for approximately $111 million. The Mississippi Approach Contract is under contract at this time with an
estimated cost of $86 million. The Arkansas Approach Contract is also under contract at this time with an estimated cost of $66 million. The new bridge
and approaches could possibly be open to traffic in 2009, and upon opening of the new bridge the demolition of the old bridge will follow shortly after.
Special appropriations made available to date total $113.3 million. The total project cost is an estimated $263 million.
During fiscal year 2005, construction continued on the main-span portion of the new, for lane Mississippi River Bridge on U.S. Highway 82 near Greenville,
Mississippi. The new bridge will replace the existing 60-year-old U.S. Highway 82 Greenville Bridge, which has a narrow two-lane roadway and is a serious
hazard to navigation on the Mississippi River.
The main-span portion of the new bridge will include: four deep river piers anchored 120 feet into the riverbed; two concrete towers soaring 425 feet above
the Mississippi River; and a spectacular cable-stayed span supported by four fans of prestressing strand steel cables. Once completed, the 1,378-foot center-span
will be the longest cable-stayed span in the continental United States.
A website, www.greenvillebridge.com, allows public access to the bridge construction project which
will be well documented with an online photo album and an interactive, state-of –the-art webcam. Other features offered on the website will be history and photos
of the old U.S. Highway 82 Greenville Bridge and educational activities and information for teachers and school children.
Future projects related to the Greenville Bridge include construction of approaches on both sides of the river (under contract now), a bypass around Greenville,
and demolition of the old U.S. Highway 82 Mississippi River Bridge.
Yazoo River Bridge at Redwood Mississippi
This project provides for the construction of a new bridge over the Yazoo River in Warren County to replace the old bridge which had a sub-standard
bridge rating of 4.0. This project was let to contract in July of 2006 for an amount of approximately $33 million, and is 40 percent complete as of
June, 2007. Key, LLC from Madison Mississippi was awarded the contract.
The Stack
Phase III of the Stack was scheduled to be complete in December 2006. This phase includes the reconstruction of the I-20/U. S. Highway 49 interchange including adding lanes
to both U.S. Highway 49 south and the frontage roads on U.S. Highway 49 and the installation of a Flyover Bridge.
Work on I-20/I-55 was also included in this phase. Additional lanes were added to I-20 and I-55 through this interchange as well.
All work on I-20/I-55, including the opening of the I-20/U.S. Highway 49 Flyover Bridge was completed by December 2006, except for permanent striping. Additional work was
added to the contract, providing for the removal and replacement of the U.S. Highway 49 south bridge over KCS Railroad. It is anticipated that traffic will be shifted to the
median on U.S. Highway 49 within two months. Once this traffic is shifted, the removal and replacement of U.S. Highway 49 south will begin. It is anticipated that construction
will be completed in early 2008.
Phase IV of the Stack is scheduled to be let when construction dollars become available. This phase will include replacing the pavement on I-20/I-55 from Gallatin Street to
the Pearl River. It also includes a new roadway from Gallatin Street to State Street.
