State Route 22 Corridor (From I-20 to I-55 near Canton, Madison & Hinds County)

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is conducting an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for possible improvements that would fulfill the project’s purpose and need. The purpose of the proposed project, as currently defined, is to help alleviate high levels of congestion and trAvel delays within the Jackson Metropolitan Area and provide a valuable full control of access connection between Interstate 20 near Edwards to Interstate 55 near Canton. Mississippi State Route (SR) 22 is currently a winding two-lane roadway extending from I-20 at Edwards to I-55 at Canton. The highway does not meet current design standards due to poor horizontal and vertical alignments and has unlimited access points. Based on traffic data, travelers primarily use the interstate corridor instead of SR 22 due to roadway deficiencies and reduced travel times. An improved facility would provide relief for the existing traffic needs, provide a safer roadway that meets current design standards, and support future anticipated growth and traffic demands. Therefore, Congress appropriated funds for the preparation of an (EIS) to study the proposed project.
