Anti-Litter Poster Contest Winners Announced
10/19/2011 12:00:00 AM
HATTIESBURG, MISS., Wednesday, October 19, 2011— The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is announcing the names of winners awarded for an anti-litter poster contest.
The team of Mrs. Jorns, Ms. Foster and Mrs. Leverette’s fifth grade class at Sumrall Elementary School won first place for creating a poster and slogan showing ways to fight litter in Mississippi. The schools that participated were Purvis Lower Elementary, Earl Travillion Attendance Center, Sumrall Elementary, Oak Grove Lower, Dixie Attendance Center, Beaumont Elementary, Richton Elementary, Petal Upper Elementary and Thames Elementary School.
All of the winners received two tickets to this weekend’s (October 22) Southern Miss Homecoming game at the “Rock” in Hattiesburg versus Southern Methodist University (SMU).
“These students did a great job of visually showing how to care of our home here in Mississippi,” said District Six Litter Control Coordinator Ashlyn Brock. Brock visited the schools to give a short presentation about how litter impacts the community and present the game tickets to the contest winners.
Along with on-going efforts to keep state highways litter free, MDOT works throughout the year with schools to educate children about their role in protecting the environment. Brock said District Six will be continuing the awareness campaign to other schools in South Mississippi throughout the school year, reaching hundreds of other children and teachers in the state.

MDOT Presents Trailer to Perry County Sheriff’s Department
10/19/2011 12:00:00 AM
PERRY COUNTY, MISS., Wednesday, October 19, 2011— The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has presented the Perry County Sheriff’s Department with a new weapon in the county’s battle against litter.
MDOT representatives presented the Perry County Sheriff’s Department with a new twelve ft. trailer, donated by the Keep Mississippi Beautiful organization and partners. The Perry County Sheriff’s Department, along with other law enforcement agencies across District Six, is teamed up with MDOT’s Mississippi Inmate Litter Removal Partnership Program.
District Six Anti-Litter Coordinator Ashlyn Brock was on hand to present the trailer to Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith. “We’re grateful for the leadership of people like Sheriff Smith who are active stakeholders in the removal of litter along highways here in South Mississippi,” said Brock.
Brock says the trailer will save time and money for taxpayers because collected litter can be removed from the roadway more efficiently. The Perry County Sheriff’s Department joined the Inmate Litter Removal Partnership Program last year.
