The division has planning, project development and implementation responsibilities.
Major responsibilities include developing statewide coordinated transportation plans,
allocating and providing oversight of federal transit funds to public and private
non-profit organizations along with local, state and tribal governments to provide
mass transit services. The overall goal is to improve access to employment, healthcare,
education, social service and recreation destinations for persons living in rural
and small urban areas through the coordination of resources. Primary functions include
developing and administering general public transit as well as specialized transportation
programs and projects. Coordinating resources to increase local and regional transportation
service availability is the major emphasis.
Major programs administered by twelve nine individuals within the division include:
- Rural General Public Transportation Program - supports capital and operating costs
of public transportation projects in areas with populations of less than 50,000.
- Elderly and Disabled Transportation Program - funds up to 80 percent of the cost
of capital equipment targeted to senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
- Rural Transit Assistance Program - supports training, technical assistance, and
demonstration projects.
- Job Access and Reverse Commute Program - provides capital, planning and operating
assistance to support access to urban, suburban and rural employment locations.
- New Freedoms Program - supports transportation services targeted to persons with
disabilities beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
