The Room to Live video was a 2007 presentation of Fox 9 News/KMSP-TV from Minneapolis, MN. The investigative team of Fox 9 News, over the course of several months, investigated crashes where occupants were severely injured or killed in rollover crashes. The reporter takes viewers on a tour of several of the post-crash vehicles that were involved in these rollovers, giving an up-close perspective on the interior of each vehicle. In all instances, the passenger compartment of the vehicles were mostly intact and had very little intrusion into the cockpit, or “cage” area of the vehicle, showing that had the driver been wearing a seatbelt, he or she would have had “room to live”. The video is a moving visual representation of the startling reality that in these instances seat belts could have made all the difference.

Below is some general information and restrictions for those wishing to schedule a viewing of the video.

There must be a guaranteed audience of at least 50 people. (Exceptions may be made for smaller groups in the immediate Jackson area.)

MDOT will provide all necessary video equipment including projector, lap top, PA system, and screen. However, if showing to large groups (for instance in an auditorium type setting) it will be necessary for the requester to provide a larger screen if needed.

Since this event takes place indoors, MDOT will also gladly show this video in lieu of one of the other safety demonstrations if one has been scheduled and gets rained out. If you are interested in using the video as this “back up plan”, please make sure you request this at the time you call to schedule the other demonstration(s).

Please note, while there are verbal descriptions and testimonies of loved ones, there are no graphic, gory, or obscene images contained on this video. However, the subject matter is of a mature nature and would best serve if viewed by students or adults ages 13 and up.

The video is approximately 8 minutes long.

It is recommended that events or requests for the video be scheduled a month in advance. However, the beginning of the school year, near prom time, and the end of the school year are the busiest times and may require more advance scheduling than during other parts of the year. So the earlier you call, the better.
