The Maintenance Division is responsible for administering many varied programs necessary for the preservation, maintenance and safety of our
state and federal highways. It performs on-going surveys of the State Maintained Highway System to compare existing conditions with established
standards. The results of these surveys can be used for scheduling maintenance activities.
The division also regulates outdoor advertising to protect and preserve the aesthetics and safety of our highway system as required by the Highway
Beautification Act of 1965. Equally important is the permitting of encroachments for utilities, driveways and selective clearing.
The administration of MDOT’s Roadside Development and Maintenance Policies, including chemical weed control and the wildflower program, is handled
here. Mowing and litter removal, concrete pavement repair, roadway sweeping, janitorial and security contracts for welcome centers and rest areas, are
but a few of the maintenance related contracts this division develops and recommends for approval to the districts.
The division plays a crucial role in the development of MDOT’s emergency response plans and in the coordination of activities with the Mississippi
Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and other government agencies.
