The Office of the Attorney General provides the Mississippi Transportation Commission and the Mississippi Department of Transportation legal representation in all state and federal courts. Nine attorneys in the office are engaged in on-going litigation and appeals and administrative advice. The types of litigation include construction and other contract disputes, personal injury claims, damage claims, removal of encroachments, removal of illegal signs and abatement of junk yards and garnishments, among others.

Other responsibilities are the administration of the Workers Compensation self-insurance program; the review of contracts between the Commission and other parties; the processing of claims filed against MDOT under the Tort Claims Act; and the representation of the Law Enforcement Division before the Weight Enforcement Appeals Board. The Legal Division also serves as counsel to MDOT in employment actions and legislative drafting. Additionally, the office provides patent, copyright and trademark services for the Department and other agencies of State Government.
